Outlaws Remaster Devlog

The dusty trails of the Wild West are calling once more, as the esteemed restoration experts at Nightdive Studios have just released a dev diary for Outlaws + Handful of Missions: Remaster, set to release later this year.

For those unfamiliar with the original, Outlaws cast players as ex-Marshall James Anderson, a gunslinger driven by revenge after a ruthless land baron shatters his quiet life. It stood out in the ’90s FPS landscape for its spaghetti Western atmosphere, iconic soundtrack, and cinematic cartoon-style cutscenes. The remaster bundles the original game with its “A Handful of Missions” expansion, offering the complete narrative experience.

Nightdive Studios, a subsidiary of Atari and masters of vintage game restoration—known for re-releases like Quake II and Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster—are employing their proprietary KEX engine once again.

Fans can expect a host of modern improvements, including support for up to 4K resolution at 120 FPS on compatible systems. The visuals have been updated with high-resolution, uncompressed cutscenes, redrawn art, and enhanced textures for weapons, characters, and environments, all while preserving the game’s original aesthetic.

Beyond the graphical overhaul, the remaster adds additional features like comprehensive modern gamepad support, complete with a new weapon wheel, rumble, and even motion/gyro controls on applicable consoles. A full suite of Trophies and Achievements will be available across platforms, and a “Vault” will allow fans to dig into behind-the-scenes content. Nightdive will also add multiplayer to the game, with cross-platform functionality across four classic modes: Deathmatch, Team Play, Capture the Flag, and the uniquely named “Kill The Fool With The Chicken!”
