The Avernum series enjoys something of a legendary status among RPG game connoisseurs, having been around since 1995 in one form or another. The series boasts party based, tactical turn-based combat, with deep story and tons of immersive text to read. It might not be a streamlined game series, like Baldur’s Gate 3, but hardcore RPG fans and old school lovers swear by it. Also 40 – 60 hour of content per game is nothing to laugh at, either.
Jeff Vogel’s Spiderweb Software has been tinkering with the game series over the decades, making it better and more refined. The most modern remaster of Avernum started back in 2011 with Avernum: Escape from the Pit, followed by Avernum 2: Crystal Souls, Avernum 3: Ruined World and now Avernum 4: Greed and Glory just came out a couple of days ago, after being successful on Kickstarter, with nearly 100.000 $ pledged by supporters.
Vogel stated that this game is the beginning of Avernum’s Great Trials Trilogy, so he is definitely going to remake the entire series, meaning that we will have two additional games down the line. You can check out Avernum 4, as well as the other games in the series on GOG or Steam.
