Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse Brings 2D Gothic Action to PS5, Xbox, and PC This Fall

Castlevania fans, it is finally time to dust off your leather coats and celebrate. After years of waiting in the shadows, the legendary franchise is making a triumphant return to its side-scrolling roots. During the Xbox Games Showcase 2026, Konami took to the stage to drop a spectacular new gameplay trailer for Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, while officially locking in a release date of October 15, 2026. Just in time for Halloween, we are getting a brand-new, beautifully gothic 2D action-exploration game that looks poised to capture everything that made the classic entries immortal.

The game is being developed by Evil Empire, the brilliant studio behind The Rogue Prince of Persia, alongside advisory support from Dead Cells creator Motion Twin. If you played the incredible Return to Castlevania DLC for Dead Cells, you already know this project is in the safest possible hands. Unlike some of the platform exclusives shown off at the event, this vampire hunt is a multiplatform affair. It will be launching across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store. Konami also confirmed a Nintendo Switch version is actively in the pipeline for a late 2026 release, though its specific date will drop a bit down the road.

A Flame-Choked Paris and a New Belmont Heir

The narrative takes a fascinating step away from the traditional, foggy landscapes of Transylvania. The year is 1499, placing the timeline exactly 23 years after the events of Castlevania 3: Dracula’s Curse. Instead of a rural village, the setting is medieval Paris, which has been transformed into an apocalyptic, burning nightmare as Dracula’s horrific forces launch a sudden, massive assault on France.

While the legendary hero Trevor Belmont ventures into the fiery streets to hold back the initial wave of monsters, the real spotlight of this adventure belongs to his daughter, Rose Belmont. As the new protagonist and the latest heir to the ultimate monster-slaying bloodline, Rose is quickly swept up in a deep, supernatural conspiracy unfolding beneath the city’s cobblestones as a mysterious, mystical castle looms on the Parisian horizon.

Visually, the game utilizes a striking, vibrant, yet deeply atmospheric gothic art style that honors the classic pixel-art legacy of the franchise while modernizing it with fluid, high-frame-rate animations. The environments are packed to the brim with traps, secret rooms, and hidden items that will make any veteran Metroidvania player feel right at home.

Rewriting the Battle Rules with Arcana and Holy Whips

The gameplay footage revealed that the iconic weapon of the family, the Vampire Killer whip, is getting a massive mechanical upgrade. It isn’t just for striking down zombies and bats anymore; Rose can crack the whip to navigate environments freely like a trapeze artist. The developers are heavily focusing on this fast-paced aerial mobility, encouraging players to swing across bottomless pits, dodge incoming projectiles, and pounce on enemies with aggressive, momentum-based whip strikes.

Beyond the signature whip, players can collect and customize Rose’s loadout with weapons spanning seven distinct combat categories alongside powerful Relics that grant various offensive and defensive buffs.

But the biggest mechanical revelation of the showcase was the introduction of the Arcana system. As Rose explores the burning catacombs and shifting corridors, she will square off against legendary franchise bosses like Death, Medusa, and Carmilla, as well as corrupted historical figures like Joan of Arc. Once you successfully defeat these titanic threats, Rose seals their spirits directly into her set of tarot cards. These cards convert the bosses into Arcana, allowing players to actively summon their unique skills, cast devastating spells, and unlock entirely new movement capabilities mid-battle.

Pre-Orders, Midnights, and Special Editions

To celebrate the series approaching its massive 40th anniversary, Konami also outlined the digital and physical editions hitting storefronts this autumn. Rolling out alongside the standard version is the digital and physical Midnight Edition. This premium bundle includes a digital sound and art gallery featuring 71 high-resolution music tracks, a stunning SteelBook case for physical collectors, and a real-world replica of Rose Belmont’s tarot card.

The Midnight Edition also dishes out major nostalgia bait with three exclusive in-game items: a Trevor-style costume, a Sypha-style costume, and a magical device called the Family’s Grace relic. Additionally, anyone who pulls the trigger on a standard pre-order will instantly unlock an exclusive Alucard-style costume for Rose to rock during her campaign.

Between its pedigree of developers, the brilliant twist on classic boss mechanics, and a fresh historical setting, Belmont’s Curse looks like the exact shot of adrenaline the franchise has been waiting for. Get your holy water ready, because October is going to be a wild ride.
