Holy Promethium! You Should Be Hyped for Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2

Holy Promethium! You Should Be Hyped for Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2

If you spent 2023 sprinting through pixelated hallways, screaming at Lord of Change daemons, and turning Chaos Cultists into fine red mist, then I have some glorious news for you. The Emperor has heard your prayers (and your shotgun blasts). Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 is officially on the horizon for 2026, and from everything we’ve seen so far, it’s looking like a masterpiece of “pixel-vomit” and high-octane heresy-purging.

Auroch Digital isn’t just giving us more of the same. They are cranking the dial up to eleven, adding more blood, more speed, and—most importantly—more characters to the mix. Grab your prayer beads and your extra ammo drums; we’re diving into what makes this sequel a massive step up from the original.

Double the Trouble: Malum and Nyra

The first big shocker from the reveal trailer was that our favorite angry blue boy, Malum Caedo, isn’t working solo anymore. While the legendary Sternguard Veteran is back to finish what he started, he’s being joined by a new playable protagonist: Nyra Veyrath.

Nyra is a Sister of Battle Celestian, and she brings a completely different vibe to the battlefield. Where Malum is a walking tank made of ceramite and spite, Nyra is built for agility and speed. She’s got a “Fervent Slide” that makes her feel way more mobile, allowing her to dance around enemies while bathing them in righteous fire. It’s a classic dynamic—do you want to be the unstoppable force or the blindingly fast blade? Having two distinct playstyles is a huge win for replayability, and honestly, who doesn’t want to see a Sister of Battle finally get the “boomer shooter” treatment she deserves?

The Holy Trinity of Destruction

We can’t talk about a Boltgun sequel without talking about the hardware. The original game gave us a fantastic arsenal, but Boltgun 2 is leaning hard into the lore with the “Holy Trinity” of Imperial weaponry: Bolters, Flamers, and Meltas.

Nyra specifically specializes in these, and the developer logs have teased some seriously satisfying flame-based weapons. There’s something uniquely cathartic about watching sprites melt into puddles of goo in 2.5D, and the new Melta Bomb mechanic sounds like a total game-changer. You can apparently slow down time to aim your throw or even shoot the bomb in mid-air to detonate it over a crowd of heretics. It’s that kind of creative, physics-based violence that makes this genre so addictive. Meanwhile, Malum is getting his own upgrades, ensuring his Chainsword remains the primary tool for dental work on Greater Daemons.

Fresh Faces (and Factions) to Blast

One of the few gripes people had with the first game was the limited enemy variety toward the end. Well, Auroch Digital clearly took that feedback to heart. Boltgun 2 is introducing the Daemons of Slaanesh and the Death Guard into the fray.

Seeing the neon-pink, screeching horrors of Slaanesh rendered in that crunchy, retro art style is a visual treat. Expect to face off against swift Seekers and the terrifyingly fast Fiends. And if you thought the Nurglings were annoying before, just wait until you see the new Bloodletters and Juggernauts charging at you. The game is moving beyond the standard industrial corridors too, taking us to mangrove swamps, dense jungles, and the dizzying heights of Hive Cities. The variety in biomes alone should keep the “purge-fatigue” at bay.

Choose Your Own Purge

Perhaps the most ambitious change in Boltgun 2 is the move toward a branching campaign. Instead of a strictly linear path, you’ll be able to choose different routes through the story. Each branch promises unique levels and encounters, which adds a layer of strategy to your crusade. Do you take the path through the swamp to intercept a Chaos ritual, or do you storm the hive spire to secure the high ground?

This structure, combined with the two different characters, means you’ll likely want to play through the game at least twice just to see everything. They’ve also addressed the “where the heck do I go?” issue from the first game by adding a navigation guide. No more wandering in circles for ten minutes because you missed a pixelated door—now you can keep the momentum going without breaking your stride.

The Grimdark Future Looks Bright

With a planned release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S in 2026, we still have a bit of a wait ahead of us. However, with the teaser of Slaanesh-themed levels and the sheer polish shown in the recent IGN Fan Fest trailers, it’s clear that this is a “labor of love” for the developers. They aren’t just making a sequel; they’re making a definitive Warhammer 40,000 action experience.

The original Boltgun was a surprise hit that proved there’s a massive appetite for retro-style shooters in the 41st Millennium. Boltgun 2 looks poised to take that crown and melt it down for scrap metal. Whether you’re a lore-hound who knows every detail of the Sister of Battle rites or just someone who likes making things go “boom,” this is definitely one to keep on your Steam wishlist.
