It is a wild time to be a Constellation member. Bethesda just dropped a massive info-dump about the future of Starfield, and if you’ve been waiting for a reason to hop back into the pilot’s seat, this might be it. Between the game-changing Free Lanes Update and the brand-new Terran Armada DLC, the Settled Systems are about to feel a lot more alive—and a lot more dangerous. Everything arrives on April 7, 2026, coinciding with the game’s highly anticipated launch on PlayStation 5.
Smooth Sailing with Cruise Mode
The biggest headline for many players is the end of the “loading screen simulator” era. The Free Lanes Update introduces a total overhaul of interplanetary travel. Instead of just fast-traveling between planets, you can now activate Cruise Mode to fly freely through a star system. The coolest part? You aren’t glued to the chair. While your ship handles the long haul, you can get up, walk around your ship, chat with your crew, or spend time at your workbenches while the stars streak past your windows. It’s the spacefaring fantasy we’ve been asking for since day one, making the journey feel just as important as the destination.
Customization Goes Hard with X-Tech
If you’re a gear-head, the new X-Tech system is going to be your new obsession. This high-end resource is being added to the game to let you push your equipment further than ever before. We’re talking about Tier 4 Legendary effects that you can actually choose rather than relying on the mercy of the RNG gods. Weapons and armor are also getting two new quality tiers—Superior and Exceptional—so your endgame build can finally reach its true potential. There is even a Ship Optimization Terminal you can install right on your vessel to tweak your stats while you’re out in the deep black.
Living Large in Outposts and Beyond
Outpost builders are getting some much-needed love too. Bethesda is finally introducing shared containers, which means no more jumping between five different planets just to find that one stack of Titanium you left in a box. You can also drop in templatized living quarters to set up a home base in seconds. To make those lonely moons feel a bit cozier, you can now keep outpost pets, including the adorable Milliewhale and a helpful Minibot. And for the explorers who prefer the ground, the new Moon Jumper vehicle is built for extreme verticality, letting you boost over mountain ranges and reach those pesky high-altitude points of interest with ease.
Facing the Terran Armada
While the free update is massive, the Terran Armada DLC is where the new story kicks in. Priced at $9.99 (or free for Premium Edition owners), this expansion introduces a terrifying new faction of “true children of Earth” who have returned with a massive robotic army to “unite” humanity by force. This isn’t just a questline; it introduces Incursions, which are dynamic, repeatable combat events where the Armada assaults various locations across the Settled Systems. You’ll also get a new companion named Delta—a robot with a bit of a morally grey attitude—and access to “NASA-tactical” military gear that looks more grounded and rugged than anything we’ve seen so far.
Smarter Exploration and New Game Plus
Bethesda is also addressing the “repetitive POI” complaint by adjusting the cooldown system for planetary locations. This means you should see a much wider variety of outposts and dungeons instead of seeing the same cryo lab three times in a row. For the Starborn out there, New Game+ is getting a huge quality-of-life boost. You can now build a Quantum Entanglement Device to carry up to 50 of your favorite items into your next universe, and you can use Quantum Essence to rank up your powers directly without having to grind through those floating-light temples for the hundredth time.
Whether you’re looking for deep-space immersion or just want to blow up some high-tech robots, this April is looking like the perfect time to head back into the black.
