Total War: Warhammer 40,000 Announced: Galactic Scale Strategy Arrives

The war for the 41st Millennium is coming to the grand strategy genre. Creative Assembly, in partnership with Games Workshop, officially unveiled Total War: Warhammer 40,000 at The Game Awards 2025. This marks a massive leap for the acclaimed Total War franchise, bringing its signature blend of turn-based campaign management and colossal real-time battles to the grim darkness of the far future.

This new title goes beyond the planetary battles of previous Warhammer real-time strategy games, offering a galactic sandbox where players must conquer systems, manage war economies, upgrade voidships, and determine the fate of entire worlds. The scale is unprecedented, blending strategic star map maneuvering with devastating ground combat. The trailer, showcased the brutal clash between the Imperium and the Orks, with a brief look at gameplay that promises destructible environments and massive unit counts.

Players will command iconic forces in a desperate struggle across the stars. Four radically distinct factions have been confirmed for the game’s launch:

  • Space Marines: Genetically engineered super-soldiers, few in number but unmatched in precision and power.
  • Astra Militarum: The massed ranks of humanity’s largest fighting force, relying on disciplined infantry legions and overwhelming firepower (tanks and artillery).
  • Orks: Brutish, relentless hordes who storm battlefields in a tide of barbaric aggression, driven by the collective power of the WAAAGH!
  • Aeldari: An ancient, waning xenos race, striking with psychic finesse and elegant weaponry before vanishing into shadow.

Creative Assembly has also promised an unparalleled degree of customization, allowing players to forge their own armies—from choosing faction colors and heraldry to tailoring combat philosophy and wargear—mirroring the freedom of the tabletop game.

While an official release date has not yet been announced (more details are expected throughout 2026), the game is confirmed to be in active development for PC, PS 5 and Xbox Series X/S. This marks the first mainline Total War title to launch simultaneously on consoles, utilizing Creative Assembly’s new engine to bring the full scale of the 40K universe to a wider audience.
