Just when you think you’ve finally settled into a peaceful rhythm of cataloging weird alien plants and building your dream seaside base, Hello Games drops a bomb on us. The legendary space sandbox has just received its massive 6.4 patch, officially known as the Swarm Update, and it completely shifts the vibe of the entire universe. If you’ve been taking a break from the stars, it is officially time to fire up your hyperdrive, dust off your starship, and dive back in. This isn’t just another minor patch; it is an absolute war effort that brings some of the most chaotic, high-stakes combat we have ever seen in the game.

Welcome to the Faction Wars
The center of this update is Expedition Twenty-Two, aptly titled The Swarm. It completely flips the script on how expeditions usually work. Instead of wandering the galaxy as a lone wolf explorer, you are immediately thrown into a massive community conflict. When you boot up, you will take a personality test that splits you into one of three distinct factions: the Royal, the Sage, or the Weaver.
Each faction gets its own unique team colors, uniforms, and starting ships. From there, it is a race to see who can contribute the most to the universal war effort. You will be taking on three core mission types: Purge, Restoration, and Sabotage. Purge missions throw you headfirst into intense combat encounters, while Restoration missions focus on cleaning up the planetary corruption left behind by the enemy. Sabotage missions allow you to disrupt the network. Everything you do helps Specialist Polo construct the Prismatic Core inside the Space Anomaly. The leading faction will eventually be memorialized in the Anomaly forever, giving everyone a massive incentive to grind for their team.

Facing the Hive of Glass
So, what exactly are we fighting? The ultimate threat in the Swarm Update is an existential nightmare called the Hive of Glass. This is a terrifyingly massive, Death Star-like boss ship that acts as a moving weapon of mass destruction. It features an opening iris that fires a laser strong enough to completely shred freighter fleets and threaten space stations.
To make matters worse, the Hive defends itself by deploying hundreds of small, incredibly agile swarmer ships. This results in the biggest, most visually stunning space dogfights in the history of the game. The screen will be absolutely filled with hundreds of laser-firing drones and explosion trails. If you are playing on modern hardware, it is a magnificent sci-fi spectacle that will genuinely make your jaw drop.

Combat Gets a Major Brain Upgrade
Hello Games didn’t just add new enemies; they fundamentally reworked how space combat feels. In the past, you could usually survive space fights by just spamming your ship weapons in the general direction of danger. That strategy will not work here.
The update introduces strict weak point mechanics for these heavy enemy ships. If you hit an enemy’s designated weak point, you are guaranteed a devastating critical hit. However, if you miss that weak point and hit any other part of the hull, your damage drops to zero percent critical chance. Precision flying and aiming matter more than ever now. Fortunately, they also upgraded third-person space flight, giving you better targeting visibility, sharper weapon aiming, and a smarter auto-follow mechanic that can now utilize your ship’s boost to keep up with retreating targets.

Exploring Corrupted Crash Sites
The chaos isn’t restricted to deep space either. Even if you are playing in standard game modes outside of the limited-time expedition, you will find the impact of the Swarm across the galaxy. Dissonant planets now feature crashed swarmer ships waiting to be discovered.
Before you can salvage these mechanical wrecks for rare technologies and materials, you will have to fight off planetary swarmers. These are fast, aggressive ground-based robotic bugs that will relentlessly hunt you down. Luckily, you can use the Gravity Gun introduced earlier this year to manipulate the battlefield, turning the environment against them. Defeating these ground swarms allows you to research their technology, helping the galactic community unlock the secrets of the Hive’s origins.

The Loot and the Polish
Of course, a massive galactic war means incredible rewards. By participating in the expedition, you can unlock an awesome new wasp-themed armor set that gives off a brilliant retro sci-fi vibe. You can also get your hands on a brand-new rifle and the massive Direwasp Flightpack, which utilizes salvaged swarm technology to let you jetpack around planets in style.
Behind the scenes, Hello Games also implemented a massive list of performance upgrades and quality-of-life fixes. Freighter battles have been heavily optimized to prevent performance drops during large-scale conflicts, and scene visibility handling is significantly faster on all platforms. They even fixed a long-standing issue where teleporter endpoints from previous galaxies were accidentally wiped when you traveled through the galactic core.
The Swarm Update is live right now across all platforms, and the expedition is scheduled to run for roughly eight weeks. Go pick a side, group up with your fellow Travellers, and help save the universe from the Hive of Glass.
