A Surprise Return to the Continent
Just when we thought Geralt of Rivia was living out his days sipping wine in Toussaint, CD Projekt Red pulled the ultimate “one last job” move. After a bit of an accidental leak on their own RED Launcher, the developers officially announced a third major DLC for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt titled Songs of the Past.
It has been over a decade since the base game completely redefined the RPG landscape, and dropping a massive new story expansion this late in the game is a delightfully wild move. Grab your silver sword, dust off your potions, and let’s dive into what we know so far about this unexpected trip back to the Path.
The White Wolf is Back
There was plenty of speculation that the next mainline game, The Witcher 4, would shift the spotlight away from Geralt. Because of that, fans were left wondering if we’d ever get to step into the boots of our favorite mutant monster hunter again. CD Projekt Red cleared the air immediately: Geralt of Rivia is officially the star of Songs of the Past.
While specific plot details are locked away tighter than a treasure vault in Novigrad, the title itself strongly hints at a nostalgic or retrospective journey. Some fans are already guessing we might explore some untouched eras of Geralt’s life, perhaps bridging gaps in his history or dealing with unresolved ghosts from his younger days.
The Dream Team Behind the Magic
CD Projekt Red isn’t tackling this massive project entirely on their own. They are co-developing the expansion with Fool’s Theory. If that name rings a bell, it is because they are the incredibly talented studio currently working on the high-profile remake of the original Witcher game and they also developed and released the narrative-heavy CRPG The Thaumaturge.
Even better, Fool’s Theory is packed with industry veterans who actually worked on the original Witcher 3 back in the day. Knowing the expansion is in the hands of creators who deeply understand the tone, dark fantasy atmosphere, and complex storytelling of the Continent means we can expect something truly special.
Setting Expectations and System Specs
We have a bit of a wait ahead of us, as Songs of the Past is officially slated to launch in 2027. It will be arriving on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. CD Projekt Red has promised to drop a massive info share later in the summer of 2026, so we won’t be entirely in the dark for long.
One important thing to keep in mind is that the game’s tech is getting a bit of a facelift to support this modern expansion. CD Projekt Red mentioned that a future update will adjust the PC system requirements to ensure everything runs smoothly. The game will now strictly require DirectX 12, and the minimum specs are being bumped up to include an AMD Ryzen 5 2600 or Intel Core i5-8400, 12GB of RAM, and a GTX 1660 or RX 5500 XT. If you are playing on older hardware, don’t panic, as the studio confirmed an older version of the game will remain available to play.
