While the world awaits the reimagining of the original, Crystal Dynamics delivered a sneak peek at the franchise’s bold new direction with Tomb Raider: Catalyst, the next mainline sequel, slated for release in 2027.
Catalyst is set across the vast, challenging landscapes of Northern India, a region renowned for its towering Himalayan peaks, dense jungles, and millennia-old ruins. The storyline begins in the wake of a mythical cataclysm that has unleashed ancient secrets and awakened mysterious guardian forces buried beneath the fractured landscape.
This adventure features an experienced, charismatic, and self-assured Lara Croft, who is now a globally recognized adventurer. The game officially unites the multiple timelines of the franchise, confirming that the events of the Survivor Trilogy (2013-2018) served as her origin, and Catalyst is set years after the Tomb Raider: Underworld era.
The new title is built on Unreal Engine 5 and is described as the largest Tomb Raider world to date. Key features revealed include:
- Vertical Traversal: The Northern India setting will offer a “vertically rich platforming playground,” challenging players to scale massive mountains and descend into mysterious hidden depths.
- Customized Tech: Lara will utilize richly customized adventure tech, including the return of her signature dual pistols and a new wrist-mounted grappling tool.
- The Race for Power: Lara must race against the world’s most notorious treasure hunters and rivals, who have descended on the region to claim the newly unleashed power for their own gain.
Tomb Raider: Catalyst is scheduled to launch in 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam), promising a high-stakes story of trust and betrayal that will reshape the future.
