The golden age of MS-DOS shareware has returned with a vengeance. After over 30 years in the shadows of its more famous cousins like Duke Nukem and Commander Keen, Snake Logan has officially stepped back into the fray. Released on December 18, 2025, BioMenace Remastered is not just a simple port, but a ground-up labor of love by Rigel Gameworks.
This remaster is a rare success story of fan passion meeting official recognition. Developed by the duo of Niko (lethal_guitar) and Bart (Dosgamert), the project began as a modern engine reconstruction. After securing the rights from original creator James Norwood, the team transformed their “SnakeEngine” into an official commercial release, now available on Steam and GOG.
A Modern Edge on Retro Steel
While the core “run and gun” gameplay remains intact, the remaster introduces a suite of features that bridge the gap between 1993 and 2025. The most striking change is the visual overhaul, which includes parallax backgrounds to add depth to the formerly flat cityscapes and refined pixel art that smooths out character animations while keeping the original’s gritty charm. For the purists, the game includes a toggle to switch back to the original graphics at any time.
The gameplay has also been rebalanced for a smoother experience. The remaster introduces per-pixel accurate collision, a weapon and grenade switching system, and the much-requested infinite lives option. Most importantly for modern players, the game now features mid-level quicksaving and is fully Steam Deck Verified, allowing for portable mutant-slaying.
Perhaps the most significant addition is the brand-new fourth episode. This chapter takes place several years after the original trilogy, adding 15 levels of fresh content. It features:
- New environments and NPC interactions.
- Two entirely new boss fights.
- 13 brand-new music tracks to complement the original Bobby Prince score.
- A built-in level editor, allowing the community to keep the “menace” alive indefinitely.
