Geoff Keighley promised a massive finish for Summer Game Fest, and Square Enix absolutely delivered by blowing the roof off the event. We finally have a name, a trailer, and a breakdown of the highly anticipated third entry in the remake project. It is officially called Final Fantasy VII Revelation, and it is shaping up to be an absolutely massive conclusion to a journey that started all the way back in 2020. Even better news for gamers everywhere is that Square Enix is ditching the timed PlayStation exclusivity this around. The game is scheduled to launch simultaneously across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC in Spring 2027.

Picking up right where the emotional and mind-bending ending of Rebirth left off, this final chapter focuses heavily on the theme of resolve. The stakes are higher than they have ever been, with Sephiroth approaching godhood and the terrifying Meteor looming in the sky. Cloud and his companions are grieving a massive loss, but they have to pull themselves together to prevent the total annihilation of the planet. Producer Yoshinori Kitase and Director Naoki Hamaguchi took the stage alongside Matt Mercer, the voice of Vincent, to prove that they are pulling out all the stops for this 30th-anniversary celebration of the original 1997 classic.

Taking to the Skies in a True Open World
The biggest jaw-dropper of the reveal trailer had to be the introduction of the legendary Highwind airship. While Rebirth gave us massive zones to explore, Revelation is opening up the entire planet without boundaries. The developers showed off a mind-blowing feature where you can fly anywhere on the world map and literally parachute out of the Highwind to land seamlessly on the ground below. This creates a massive sense of scale as you travel between iconic locations like the Outskirts of Midgar, the tropical Mideel Archipelago, and the heavily anticipated, war-torn nation of Wutai, which was completely omitted from the previous game to give it the spotlight it deserves here.

Because the planet is actively tearing itself apart, the narrative structure is shifting to adapt to the chaos. Huge planetary guardians known as Weapons are waking up and unleashing absolute terror across the globe, forcing the party to divide and conquer. This means players will have a ton of freedom to choose where to go, who to help, and what order to tackle these massive global conflicts. Your choices throughout these localized crises will directly impact the emotional character arcs of your party members, leading toward what Hamaguchi promises will be the most satisfying culmination of thirty years of storytelling.

Changing Outfits and Swapping Jobs
When it comes to the combat, the universally praised hybrid real-time and tactical system is making a return with some incredibly deep upgrades. The most exciting new gameplay mechanic introduced is called Function Integrated Tactical Suitwear, or the FITS system. Instead of outfits just being cosmetic flair, changing your character’s clothes in Revelation will completely alter their movesets and battle boosts. This system essentially acts as a hidden Job Class system within the game. For example, the trailer gave us a glimpse of Tifa rocking a look that grants her the abilities of a Black Mage, while Cloud can swap gears to take on a traditional Warrior playstyle.
The battle roster is also finally complete now that every fan-favorite hero is fully playable. Players will finally get their hands on Vincent Valentine, who brings lightning-fast gunplay and his iconic, terrifying bestial transformations to the battlefield. Alongside him is the cantankerous pilot Cid Highwind, who uses powerful lance strikes to control the tempo of a fight, closing distances for high single-target damage or sweeping the field with area-of-effect attacks. With the added ability to swap characters instantly on the fly during combat, building the ultimate synergy between your party members is going to be deeper and more creative than anything we saw in Remake or Rebirth.

Facing the Ultimate Endgame
Square Enix is clearly making sure that the final hours of this trilogy leave a permanent mark on gaming history. The trailer gave hardcore fans exactly what they wanted by showcasing legendary optional superbosses like Ruby Weapon, Emerald Weapon, and Ultimate Weapon actively wreaking havoc on the map. These fights are being built to test your mastery of the FITS system and character synergies to their absolute limits. Everything in this game is building toward that final, desperate march into the Northern Crater for the ultimate showdown against Sephiroth.
The road to Spring 2027 is going to feel incredibly long, but knowing that the story is fully written and the development team is already optimizing the experience for a simultaneous multi-platform launch means we are in for a incredibly polished treating when it arrives. It is an ambitious, massive undertaking that represents three decades of fandom, and it looks like Square Enix is safely on track to deliver a masterpiece that honors the legacy of Cloud Strife and the planet he is fighting so hard to protect.
