If you have been keeping your eyes glued to the real-time strategy landscape, you already know that Tempest Rising has been a massive breath of fresh air for classic RTS fans. Developed by Slipgate Ironworks and published by 3D Realms alongside Knights Peak and Saber Interactive, the game successfully revived that beloved, hard-hitting 90s base-building magic. But while commanding the high-tech Global Defense Force and the aggressive Tempest Dynasty has kept us thoroughly entertained, RTS fans are always hungry for more.
That hunger is about to be fully satisfied. The developers have officially pulled back the curtain on the game’s first major single-player campaign expansion: The Veti’s Wrath.

This expansion is much more than a simple map pack. It is a full-scale, narrative-heavy addition that introduces a highly anticipated third playable faction to the game. Rather than just dropping these new units into skirmish modes, the development team is delivering a massive, dedicated campaign that completely changes the rules of engagement on Earth’s war-torn battlefields. Let us dive into what makes this newly announced expansion so incredibly exciting.
The Third Faction Has Arrived
Since the early days of Tempest Rising’s development, players have caught glimpses of a mysterious, looming threat in the background of the campaign. The newly announced expansion finally thrusts this enigmatic force directly into the spotlight. Say hello to the Veti, an ancient, technologically superior, and deeply brutal civilization that once ruled over the planet long before humanity ever walked the earth.

Having spent eons shattered, hunted, and scraping by in the shadows while mankind tore the world apart, the Veti have finally united under a single, absolute purpose: Reclamation. Under the distant, rumbling guidance of K’uhul the Immutable—an ancient, imprisoned Veti ruler entombed for devouring colony worlds across the stars—the Veti are launching an all-out war to reclaim their stolen technology, purge the corrupting forces threatening their kind, and remind humanity exactly who belongs at the bottom of the cosmic food chain.
A Brand New Dark-Fantasy Playstyle: Subjugation and Sacrifice
If the GDF is all about high-tech, mobile tactical defense and the Dynasty relies on desperate, hard-hitting, resource-heavy aggression, the Veti introduce a playstyle that feels wonderfully dark and asymmetrical. They are a faction designed around the concepts of subjugation and sacrifice.

The Veti do not let fallen soldiers go to waste, regardless of which side of the battlefield they died on. Using their advanced alien biotechnology, you can harvest and convert fallen infantry into mindless thralls known as the Enlightened. These thralls aren’t just extra bodies to throw into the meat grinder; they act as a living resource. During a chaotic firefight, you can actively sacrifice your Enlightened forces mid-battle to instantly fuel your machinery, heal your elite units, or trigger massive temporary combat buffs. It is a macabre, highly satisfying economic loop that turns every casualty into a tactical advantage.
This theme of dark sacrifice extends directly into your base building. At the absolute heart of every Veti base sits an Ascension Anchor. These massive sacrificial obelisks grow in power and ascend through tiers of technology by consuming your own Enlightened units. As the anchor climbs to higher tiers, it extends glowing energy tethers to your surrounding production and defensive structures, supercharging their efficiency and defensive capabilities. Because you can choose where these power tethers flow, you can actively adapt your base’s defensive network to counter incoming enemy pushes on the fly.

Devastating New Toyboxes of Alien Destruction
To support this unique economy, the Veti roster is packed with incredibly unique machinery and infantry. While the expansion is set to include a staggering 9 buildings, 7 vehicles, 6 infantry units, 5 air units, and 5 specialists, a few specific units have already stolen the spotlight.
First up is the colossal War Ender, a towering mechanical titan that serves as a walking nightmare for human armor divisions. For players who prefer a more calculated, stealthy approach, the Phantom Artillery can rain down devastating long-range plasma fire while remaining completely veiled from enemy sight. The Veti also rely heavily on teleportation tactics, letting you blink strike squads directly past defensive walls or pull damaged units out of danger. Combined with a terrifying new superweapon and 5 unique support powers, the Veti playstyle is all about overwhelming force and ruthless spatial control.

How to Get Your Hands on the New Content
If you are eager to try out these new mechanics, you do not have to wait until the expansion’s official launch later this year. Slipgate Ironworks has released a special TactiCon demo on Steam that is available right now.
This public demo features the first two missions of the upcoming 11-mission single-player campaign, letting you get a hands-on feel for the Veti’s unique base-building mechanics and sacrifice-based economy. It also includes the first two missions of the previous GDF and Dynasty campaigns, giving newcomers a perfect starting point. Furthermore, players can jump into skirmish mode against AI bots or host custom multiplayer games to test out the full Veti faction roster across four distinct maps.

When the full expansion launches, the Veti single-player campaign will be a paid DLC. However, in an incredibly consumer-friendly move, the developers have confirmed that playing as the Veti in multiplayer, skirmish, and custom games will be completely free for anyone who owns the Tempest Rising base game. This ensures the multiplayer community stays united while giving campaign enthusiasts a massive new story to sink their teeth into.
