If you are a fan of high-stakes hack-and-slash action, your radar just picked up a major new target. Independent developer Runes Studio, alongside publisher The Arcade Crew, officially took to the stage at the PC Gaming Show to unveil Wardens of Avalon. Stepping entirely away from the slow, grid-based movement of traditional tactical games, this title is a roaring, dark fantasy top-down action RPG that brings speed, intensity, and deep survival mechanics to a beautifully grim setting.
While the full version will launch a bit down the road, the teams confirmed that players will get their hands on a major PC early access alpha via Steam by the end of the year. Runes Studio is leaning heavily into a community-led development style, intending to fine-tune the combat responsiveness, weapon balance, and basebuilding elements side-by-side with player feedback throughout the alpha phase.

A Dark Twist on Arthurian Legend
The narrative foundation of Wardens of Avalon is a brilliant, gritty reimagining of traditional British folklore. The story drops players directly into a fractured, decaying version of the mythical island of Avalon. In this bleak reality, King Arthur’s legendary court has completely rotted away due to a terrifying, parasitic cosmic infection known as The Blight.
Rather than commanding a group of distant pawns, you take control of a disgraced order of protectors known as the Sovereign Knights. These battle-worn warriors operate under a strict, intimate dynamic where each knight serves as a sworn protector to a specific, vulnerable individual. This thematic bond drives the main campaign, forcing you to fight tooth and nail to keep your wards alive while purging the creeping rot from the land.
The narrative design also boasts an incredible twist on classic fantasy creature archetypes. The wilderness is filled with subverted monsters—terrifying, horrific beasts who have been rejected by the civilized world but choose to act heroically. Instead of hunting them for casual loot drops, you can actively rescue, befriending, and recruit these tragic, monstrous outcasts to fight alongside you on the front lines.

High-Octane Real-Time Combat and Rebuilding Camelot
When it comes to the moment-to-moment gameplay, Wardens of Avalon is all about fast-paced precision. The combat is fully real-time, requiring you to master a lethal dance of snappy combos, strict stamina management, perfectly timed dodges, and high-reward parries. You will be slicing through aggressive hordes of blighted enemies, meaning quick reflexes and split-second spatial awareness are your absolute best tools for survival.
But surviving the wilderness is only half the battle. The gameplay loop heavily incorporates deep survival crafting and basebuilding mechanics. As you gather rare resources and clear out enemy infestations, you will actively work to establish outposts, secure supply lines, and rebuild a fortified shelter within the ruins of a fallen Camelot.

Best of all, you don’t have to face the terrors of the Blight alone. The game fully supports 1-4 player online co-op, allowing you and up to three friends to team up, synchronize your custom combat builds, and manage your growing settlements together. The customization tree looks highly flexible, letting you specialize your character with specialized weapons, gear modifications, and supernatural abilities to create the ultimate monster-slaying squad.
With its combination of lightning-fast real-time hack-and-slash action, a rich cooperative survival loop, and a genuinely fresh take on iconic mythology, Wardens of Avalon is instantly positioning itself as a must-watch project for action RPG fans. Make sure your blades are sharpened for the alpha later this year.
