Wizards of the Coast, in partnership with developer Invoke Studios, made a major announcement at The Game Awards 2025 with the world premiere of Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons. This new title takes the storied D&D universe in a surprising direction, eschewing the traditional CRPG format for a third-person, single-player, open-world action-adventure game.
Warlock centers entirely on the compelling fantasy of the Warlock class. Players take on the role of Kaatri—a veteran warrior who has made a dark pact with an otherworldly Patron to wield forbidden magic. The character is portrayed by renowned actress Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica).
Invoke Studios, which previously worked on Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance, is focusing on “immersive, expressive magic.” This means players will use their spells, such as the iconic Eldritch Blast, not only in fast-paced combat against classic D&D monsters like Beholders, but also for exploration and solving environmental puzzles across a dark fantasy world. The developers cite influences from games like Deus Ex and Far Cry, hinting at a high degree of player agency in how challenges are overcome.
The studio confirmed that there will be no dice-rolling or strict replication of tabletop mechanics. This is a story-driven action experience, not a turn-based RPG like Baldur’s Gate 3.
While platforms have not been officially locked down, the title is anticipated to launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. A full gameplay reveal is scheduled for Summer 2026.
