Embracing the Fan Remake of VtM: Redemption

Embracing the Fan Remake of VtM: Redemption

If you recently finished Bloodlines 2 and are looking for more Vampire action, a dedicated team of modders is breathing new “unlife” into an original classic. Vampire: The Masquerade – Reawakened (formerly known as Redemption Reimagined). It is a massive total conversion mod for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim that seeks to recreate the 800-year epic of Christof Romuald and Vampire: The Masquerade – Redemption.

Originally intended as a faithful 1:1 remake, the project hit a significant legal hurdle in late 2024. While Paradox Interactive (the current owners of the World of Darkness IP) gave the project their blessing, Activision—who published the original 2000 game—denied permission to use their specific story assets.

Rather than giving up, the lead developer Galejro and his team pivoted. The project has been rebranded as a “canonical reinterpretation.” This means:

  • Legal Safety: The team is stripping out non-canonical elements owned by Activision.
  • Lore Accuracy: The story is being rewritten to align more closely with the current Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition (V5) lore.
  • Fresh Perspectives: Expect the familiar journey through 12th-century Prague and Vienna into modern-day London and New York, but with new twists that keep even veteran players on their toes.

The mod is far more than a simple reskin of Skyrim. The team has integrated deep RPG systems specifically for the Kindred experience:

  • The Coterie System: For the first time, players can switch between different members of their coterie (like Serena or Erik) during gameplay, rather than just controlling the protagonist.
  • Humanity & Disciplines: A reworked Humanity system (similar to Bloodlines 1) and iconic Disciplines like Celerity, Potence, and Auspex have been custom-coded into the Skyrim engine.
  • Modern Weaponry: The modern-day sections feature functional firearms with custom reload animations that many fans argue surpass Bethesda’s own internal work.

In addition to the massive undertaking of remaking the main campaign, the VTM: Reawakened team is also developing a parallel series known as the “Chronicles” mods. These are designed to be smaller, bite-sized experiences that expand the World of Darkness within the Skyrim engine without requiring the 800-year commitment of the main story.

While the main “Reawakened” project is a reimagining of Redemption, the Chronicles serve as both a testing ground for new mechanics and a way to provide immediate content to the community.

Unlike the linear path of Christof Romuald, these are self-contained “One-Shot” stories. They often focus on specific clans or historical moments that didn’t get enough screen time in the original game.

The team uses these smaller mods to “live-test” complex systems like the Coterie switching mechanic and advanced V5 Disciplines. For example, the upcoming Vienna chronicle specifically tests verticality and urban stealth—crucial components for the modern-day sections of the main game.

By separating these from the main plot, the writers can explore deeper “canonical fixes.” They are currently using these stories to introduce lesser-known sourcebook characters, such as Dominique (Ecaterina’s canonical companion) and the survivors of the Ardan’s Chantry raid.

A unique aspect of the Chronicles development is the “Grand Vote.” The developers frequently poll the community on their Discord to decide which city or clan should be the focus of the next one-shot. This level of transparency has kept the project’s momentum high even during the legal rebranding in late 2024.

Status Update: As of late 2025, the team has completed roughly 25% of the Prague storyline. While a full release is still a way off, a launch window for 2026 was recently teased in their final major development report of 2025.

If you want to stay updated on the release dates for the individual Chronicles or the progress of the 2026 main release, the Discord is the primary hub for all development logs about the main mod and the smaller Chronicles.
