Square Enix just dropped a massive surprise during the June 2026 Nintendo Direct, and traditional RPG fans are collectively losing their minds. We are officially getting the first-ever HD-2D entry in the franchise with Final Fantasy Resonance. If you have been dynamic-camera-shy or missing the old-school days of pixel art and actual turn-based strategy, this one is tailored right for you.

The coolest twist is where the game gets its DNA. It is a massive, premium console reconstruction of the story from the first season of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, the incredibly popular mobile game that recently shut down its global servers. But do not let the mobile origins throw you off. Square Enix has made it clear that this is not a lazy port or a microtransaction-filled gacha game. It is a completely reimagined, standalone turn-based RPG built from the ground up for major platforms, including PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and both the original Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Switch 2.

The story follows Rain and Lasswell, two knights from the Kingdom of Grandshelt, on a classic world-spanning journey to protect the sacred crystals from a mysterious armored threat known as Veritas of the Dark. Along the way, you get a beautiful new world map to explore, complete with airships, chocobos, hidden secrets, and a brutal colosseum. Visually, the game is combining that gorgeous, dioramas-like pixel style with dramatic 3D angles, meaning the combat looks incredibly cinematic without losing that old-school charm.

Speaking of combat, the gameplay mechanics look phenomenal. It features a tactical turn-based battle system where you focus on hitting enemy weaknesses to stagger them, which breaks their defenses and unlocks extra turns for devastating Resonance attacks. Even better, the developers are leaning heavily into series nostalgia through a feature called Visions. You can collect and equip the echoes of legendary Final Fantasy legends to unlock new jobs and party customization options. Icons like Cloud, Terra, Zidane, and the Warrior of Light will literally fight alongside your core party.

With 33 brand-new music tracks from the composers at Elements Garden and an incredibly deep combat engine, this looks like the perfect blend of modern visual flair and golden-era RPG mechanics. Luckily, we do not have to wait a lifetime to play it either. The official release date is locked in for October 22, 2026.
