The Force was strong at The Game Awards 2025, as a single-player Star Wars RPG set in the beloved Old Republic era was officially unveiled: Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic. The announcement sent ripples of excitement across the galaxy, primarily because the project is being helmed by Casey Hudson, the veteran director behind the original Knights of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy.
Developed by Hudson’s newly formed Arcanaut Studios in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games, Fate of the Old Republic is pitched as a single-player, narrative-driven action RPG and a spiritual successor to the seminal Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR).
The cinematic teaser trailer, rendered in Unreal Engine 5, showed a Force user and two companions—including an impressive droid and a Quarren—exploring ancient ruins before igniting a blue lightsaber in confrontation with a mysterious alien entity. The game is confirmed to center on the player’s journey as a Force user across a galaxy “on the edge of rebirth,” where every decision directly shapes their path toward the Light or Dark Side.
While the announcement confirms the return of the fan-favorite Old Republic era, Hudson was clear that this is not a direct sequel or continuation of the original KOTOR games. Instead, it’s an opportunity to tell an entirely new story, using the decades of technological advancement since the first KOTOR to deliver a highly immersive and cinematic Star Wars experience driven by player agency.
Given that Arcanaut Studios was only recently founded, the game is in its very early stages, meaning fans may have to wait several years to fully step into the new Old Republic.
