On July 15, 2026, Thief Gold (the expanded 1998 version of Thief: The Dark Project) officially joined the GOG Preservation Program after winning the first-ever community vote by GOG Patrons.
This isn’t just a simple re-upload. The new GOG version is properly future-proofed. It ships with the latest NewDark 1.27 engine update for solid compatibility on modern PCs, improved UI scaling, better default graphics and audio settings, and full controller support thanks to the community Gamepad Mod integrated with GOG’s own Input Wrapper. You can play with PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, Logitech, and even Amazon Luna controllers without hassle. Purists will appreciate that the original pre-Gold Thief: The Dark Project is also included and can be launched with one click. German, French, and Polish localizations round out the package.
The rest of the classic trilogy is already available on the store as well. Thief II: The Metal Age and Thief: Deadly Shadows have long been part of the GOG catalog, and the 2014 reboot (as THIEF: Definitive Edition) is there too. There’s even a convenient Thief Bundle if you want the full set in one go. Everything is DRM-free, of course, with offline installers so the games remain playable no matter what happens to online services.
The GOG Preservation Program exists exactly for moments like this: taking beloved older titles, fixing them up for today’s hardware, and promising long-term support so they don’t disappear into the abandonware bin.
